Trees and animals are also human beings - Anche alberi e animali sono esseri umani

The cure for human cancer on Earth is inherent in humanity itself. At any time we could change our attitude and develop a new paradigm in which to evolve without damaging the environment that hosts us and of which we are part. The point is that there is a lack of political and ecological will, of course, but also the minute awareness of the people. If the Earth dies due to the ill will of us human beings, it will not be of natural causes, but murder and the penalty to be paid will be our extinction ...

Since the end of the 1980s, when the VVTT vegetarian club was still based in Calcata, we have collected thousands of signatures so that the status of "human beings" was recognized for all animals.

Obviously, if this happened, it would immediately lead to the closure of all farms and slaughterhouses. I remember that I sent that request to the rulers at the time, trying to sensitize the then President of the Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, who replied by saying that it was not his prerogative to intervene in this sense. Well, later, also to silence public opinion, at least the law against the mistreatment of pets passed, which by now have become in effect "life companions" and affective substitutes for many humans.

Unfortunately, the same consideration is not addressed to the other animals that are still tortured and vivisected, abused in all ways, killed for culinary purposes or for fun and games. Here I note that even the Catholic Church does not consider "pietas" towards our fellow men as an ethical-philosophical (not to say religious and moral) necessity.

The same disrespect is directed towards the plant world: trees. Plants - as the botanist Stefano Mancuso said - are the first forms of life, endowed with intelligence and consciousness, that appeared on the planet and it is they that allow the existence of all living species on the planet, including man. Plants constitute the rib, the base, on which the whole world in which we live is built. Believing to be above Nature is one of the most serious dangers for the survival of our species.

Testo Italiano:

Lay spirituality and life in the world - Spiritualità laica e vita nel mondo

Affresco di Carlo Monopoli

The sage Ramana Maharshi said, "Whether you continue to live in a family or give up and go to live in a forest, your mind will haunt you. The ego is the source of thoughts. It creates the body and the world and you. suggests that you are a grihasta (a worldly man). If you renounce the world you will only substitute the thought of sannyas (renunciation) for that of grihasta and the forest environment for the family environment. The mental obstacles will remain, however, indeed, in a new environment they will even increase. It is useless to change the environment. The obstacle is in the mind, which has to be "understood" both at home and in the forest. If you can do it in a forest, why not in society? change your environment? You can engage in research even now, in whatever environment you are. "

All in all I believe that for us laymen life "in the world" is more congenial, also because our research never goes beyond the self ... and the self is present everywhere and in every time.

And here are my reflections on this issue.

The individual I (ego) arises from the reflection of consciousness in the mirror of the mind. An identification superimposition with the observed object. The object is the body-mind that reacts in relation (to contact) with other external objects.

The moment that, in self-knowledge, the fictitious identity with the agent disappears, what remains is the pure awareness of the Self. It is therefore not necessary, for the purpose of realization, that the images - the world and the observer - disappear, it is sufficient for the false identity with the reflected object / subject (ego) to disappear. This means that the world can safely continue to manifest itself not being perceived as a separate reality, much like a dream could be compared to the dreamer. At this point the Self and the manifestation of him are seen as the exact same thing while the sense of the separative self (of the me and the other) is obliterated. Ultimately dualism is only self-ignorance.

The sage watches the actions unfold without there being any propensity or intention or judgment in him. Spontaneously everything happens conveniently and consequently to the designated "destiny". Destiny is the response to the natural interaction (and predisposition) of the various elements involved ... Since everything happens automatically, there is no "preference" in the behavior of the wise. Indeed, his own action is (apparently) intentional only in the eyes of "others", since for the wise everything happens by itself. Every event experienced simply happens in his presence and he is the silent and detached witness. His action (or state) can be compared to sleepwalking, or to sleep when awake.

And also the concept of "destiny" and action has a meaning only in the mind of the observer who is still identified with the outside, or rather of an ego that identifies with the agent and with his actions. But the moment - as already said - that this identification is destroyed, every other connected concept disappears.

Wisdom consists in remaining immune from delusion after understanding the truth. The fear of action and its consequences (karma) remains only in those who see even the slightest difference between oneself and the other. As long as there is the idea that the body / mind is the ego, one cannot be an expression of truth.

But it is certainly possible for anyone, and in any condition, to know their true nature since it is absolutely true and real, it is the unicum for everyone. In fact, the state of pure Being is common to all and is the direct experience of each one. Living one's true nature this is meant by self-realization, as the self is present here and now.

The thought of feeling separate is the only obstacle to the realization of the all-pervading and omnipresent Being. And also from the empirical point of view, identifying with the agent (ego) is an impediment to the proper functioning of the psychosomatic apparatus, in the context of global functioning. Therefore, the intellectual acceptance of the truth is already a liberating form from the intentional (rational) propensity to act. What is bound to happen will happen.

It is in everyone's experience that struggling with the question is a handicap in finding the answer. Regardless of whether you meet a teacher or not, each path is valid only for the mind. In my experience, the relationship with a teacher does not have the purpose of transmitting any doctrine or spiritual teaching but rather to perceive the "touch" or "perfume" of its realization. His words are only a subterfuge to convey his "grace" (there is no other word more pertinent and appropriate) ... spending time in his "presence" ...

And the confirmation of this comes from another great sage, Nisargadatta Maharaj, who said: "Every path leads to unreality. Paths are creations with the intention of transmitting knowledge. Therefore paths and movements (religions) cannot lead to Reality since their function is to involve you in the dimension of learning, while reality comes before this. "

Paolo D’Arpini

Testo Italiano:

Full moon in July, return to nature and Gurupurnima - Luna piena di luglio, ritorno alla natura e Gurupurnima

Through deep ecology, I learned to consider nature as my real home, also trying to draw my sustenance from it.

The rediscovery of belonging to the "HomeTerra" is a way to recognize the sacredness of life, in all its facets, and among the natural mysteries, those that most intrigue me are those related to the knowledge of plants. Only plants can keep certain secrets. Plants are undoubtedly the living beings closest to the primordial spirit and are the repositories of the magical power of life. Suffice it to say that at the beginning of religiosity and divination it was the plants that gave the first images of a "psychic" world that accompanies the material one.

Man wandering in nature has discovered the properties of some "spiritual" herbs that have allowed him to reconnect to the cosmos. In India, for example, the celebration of the full moon in July is particularly important because it is dedicated to the primordial Guru, who is Shiva himself, teacher of life and connoisseur of all the secrets of the forest and natural cycles.

In Europe and in the westernized world - unfortunately - the tendency to rationalize all knowledge and to regiment the calculation of time in an artificial way is one of the main causes of the conflict with the cycles of the Earth and of nature as a whole. This attempt to impose group mental thought-forms on seasonal and cosmic flows (which, in reality, should govern us), is causing ever greater dystonia with the Earth, also causing violence to our energy and biological systems.

It is as if our system fed on food not grown naturally, in gardens, but in factories, using synthetic ingredients. For humans, the way of living time is, in the present historical period, purely artificial, not following, as already mentioned, the cycles of nature.

Fortunately, there remain some "experiential cracks" that can lead us back to naturalness and one of these cracks is represented by the full moon of July. In this moment, with the arrival of the hot season, inhibitions are loosened, we feel closer to our origins, we like to go around naked and free and also the lunar rays are particularly strong and suggest new perspectives for holistic sharing.

In the Aztec culture, naturalistic theology was connected to the maximum expansion of the lunar disk, we perceive it for example in the hymn dedicated to the Venusian Feast. "The flower of my heart has opened, here is the midnight lady, she came - our mother - she came, she the goddess Tamoanchan ..."

Testo Italiano

Deep ecology: a way without a way ...

Our path towards deep ecology, towards the implementation of bioregionalism, is not marked, we have no maps to follow, indications that establish the path ... but to proceed we must start walking.

The continuity of our society, as a human species, requires an evolutionary key, a global vision, through which to open our minds to the awareness of sharing the life experience with the entire planet.

This is the vision of the ecology of the deep, the science of the inseparability of life.

It follows that both politics and the human economy must take ecology into account in order to initiate technological progress that is not opposed to life and that is in tune with the life processes of the planet. Science and technology in every field of application will have to answer the question: Is this environmentally compatible? The machinery, the energy sources, the disposal of by-products, the production of food, the relationship with animals, must be made in terms of ecological sustainability.

A rapid process of industrial and agricultural reconversion and requalification must be initiated which in itself will be able to support the economy. In fact, the conversion alone will favor the overcoming of the current state of economic and social enpasse. A great human revolution including our making peace with the global life of the planet.

The evolutionary key we propose lies in the radical change of vision, passing from the right-left criterion (now overtaken by the situation) to a consciousness of coexistence and sharing of the vital context, a consciousness devoid of hypocrisy and cunning, aimed at deepening the values of life (in society and in the habitat). In fact, by abandoning the now obsolete concept of right-left, we can easily enter the world of belonging and sharing. The awareness of being an integral part of the whole is the only way out of the vortex of a repetitive and ruinous barbarism.

Testo Italiano:

False identification and true identity - Falsa identificazione e verà identità

"Identifying oneself with a specific shape name absolutely does not correspond to the truth and moreover if one identifies with the" person "one cannot help but assume its strengths and weaknesses, to welcome its nuances and stains, but we are Harlequin or Pulcinella? " (Saul Arpino)

Spiritual experience and stable self-realization.

In truth "I" (as consciousness) I observe the character who can manifest himself only through my conscious observation. I don't judge him, I love him as I love anyone who enters my conscious sphere.

The experience of the ultimate state, of consciousness free from identification, is exhibited in various spiritual schools such as: Satori, Holy Spirit, Samadhi, Shaktipat, etc. It is usually understood that this experience of "awakening" to one's nature is consequent to a particular condition of openness in which the "grace" of the Self (pure Awareness) can manifest itself and impart knowledge of what we have always been and always will be.  Unfortunately, due to the accumulation of "vasana" mental tendencies, the lived experience does not always stabilize in permanent realization.

The awakening therefore does not correspond to the realization (or only in rare cases of full spiritual maturity). And here we are faced with a paradox, on the one hand there is the unequivocal awareness of the ultimate state that can never be erased, on the other a partial obscuring of this truth following the residual activity of the vasanas that continue to operate in the mind of the seeker ...

Once revealed, knowledge takes time to stabilize. The Self is certainly within the direct experience of everyone, but not as one can imagine, it is simply what it is. This "experience" is called samadhi. But due to the fluctuation of the mind, knowledge takes practice to stabilize.

Therefore the work of the lay spiritual seeker consists in eliminating the vasanas. A great help in this cleansing work - as Ramana Maharshi stated - results in being near a realized saint, so the vasanas cease to be active, the mind becomes quiet and samadhi occurs. In this way the seeker gets a correct experience in the presence of the teacher.

One practice to keep awareness fixed on the Self (Noumenon or real subject) is the questioning of "who am I?", And if thoughts arise during self-inquiry, one should ask "to whom do these thoughts arise?" . In this way it will be possible to remain as long as possible on the sense of presence, without giving an objective identification to this pure subjective identity.

To keep this experience stably, an effort is necessary and finally the seeker will know his true nature even in the midst of everyday life. this is the state that lies beyond our effort or lack of effort.

From here we understand the importance of "awakening" for which, once the "joy of the Self" has been tasted, the seeker cannot help but turn to it repeatedly trying to regain it.

Once the joy of peace has been experienced, no one will want to turn to some other research.

Paolo D'Arpini

Testo Italiano:

Freedom from religions and ethnic groups - Libertà dalle religioni e dalle etnie

Dipinto di Franco Farina

Our true spiritual nature, when listened to with respect, is beyond dualism. Unfortunately, the mental scheme of religions, superimposed on the spontaneous revelation of the human in us, continues to cloud the simple awareness of existing, of belonging to an inseparable whole of which we are an integral part.

Even before being Christians, Mohammedans or Buddhists, we are consciousness  but this awareness is so clouded that our intrinsic qualities are submerged by a plethora of ideas, constraints and structures pre-established by various religious beliefs. A fence that prevents freedom of expression in terms of man's natural spirituality.

Suffice it to see the improper use that is made of the term layman by the Catholic religion, implying that it is a person not belonging to the priestly class but a member of the religion. This is absurd from an etymological and glottological point of view. But this misuse is brazenly carried forward in the mentions made by the Vatican in reference to the so-called lay believers of the church (meaning ordinary people, heads of families or other not ordained in the priestly caste but belonging to the religion). This lexical fraud contributes to mystify and differentiate what is absolutely indivisible: the spirit.

From birth to death we remain in a cage and getting out of it seems almost impossible. Little by little, man is increasingly recognizing himself as an inhabitant of the Earth and not particularly of a religion or ethnicity. This tendency to unity must be helped through the awareness of a true natural and secular spirituality, which brings man's personal freedom back to the original manifestation of him.

Children, infants, are the first exploited, in an ideological and religious sense, forced by their own parents and social obligations (by now consolidated) to submit to religious exploitation. Even before he has been able to understand what religion means, an innocent child is forced to a religious path, completely unconsciously, starting with baptism, then confirmation and then communion again. The innocent child is tied to rituals and a faith that he does not know and is not old enough to understand if she is good or bad.

In this way, free spiritual expression is not helped but society is locked up in a prison of thoughts, and this applies to both religions and ideologies.

I invite decent and sincere people to become aware of this, at the same time I invite the religious (ie the hypocritical cheaters) to stop with this slaughter of human intelligence.

Paolo D'Arpini

Testo Italiano:

Bioregional and community life in an urban context - Vita bioregionale e comunitaria in un contesto urbano

"Bioregionalism is that form of decentralized human organization which, aiming to maintain the integrity of biological processes, life formations and specific geographic formations of the bioregion, helps the material and spiritual development of the human communities that inhabit it"(Thomas Rebb)

My life was spent in an urban context, I was born and lived in Rome and I also lived for several years in Verona, having also attempted a re-home experiment in a small abandoned village in Upper Lazio, Calcata, and since 2010 I moved to a small town in the Marche, Treia, and this is a next step towards my search for an ideal sociological arrangement. I can therefore say that my "bioregional" process took place in a "citizen" social environment, in a human community "organism" ... Rome is inhabited by 6 million people, in short, it is a metropolis, Verona has almost half million inhabitants, Calcata less than a thousand, while Treia reaches almost ten thousand. In short, I am looking for a happy medium, suitable for maintaining a healthy relationship with the environment and animals without having to give up the advantages of the "civitas", being we human beings highly socializing….

The word "Bioregionalism" as well as the term "Deep Ecology" are neologisms coined towards the end of the 70s of the last century, respectively by Peter Berg and Arne Naess, a writer and an ecologist, but they represent a much older way of life , which indeed is part of the history of life on the planet and has characterized all human civilizations (until the advent of savage industrialization and consumerism). Let's say that "bioregionalism" (which is equivalent to profound ecology) distinguishes a way of thinking that moves from the profound need to re-establish a sacred relationship with the earth. This relationship is achieved by starting from the desire to understand - by inhabiting it - the place where we live.

In fact, a bioregion is not an enclosure whose boundaries are definitively established but a sort of magnetic field (aura - genius loci) distinguishable from neighboring fields only by the intensity of the characteristics that form its identity, in the same way as human beings, simultaneously different and similar to each other.

From a bioregional perspective - having to analyze the anthropological requirements of an ideal city - it is first necessary to see the aspects of what a city is. We use the term city that derives from "civitas" but we must also consider the other definition "urbs", these two terms have equal value in the foundation and urbanization of the home.

From the anthropological point of view we know that a small community of 1000 people allows all its members personal knowledge and reciprocal inter-relationship. Everything produced has all members as users and the same goes for what is discarded. In ancient communities, in the tribes that were the basis of human life for thousands of years, reciprocity or solidarity was an element of survival and development. When we slowly reached a sum of tribes of the same original stock (let's say a hundred entities of 1000 members) it was said that a people, a society, in short, a “civitas” was born. We must therefore start from a preconceived element, namely that the scope of an "ideal community" should not exceed one hundred thousand inhabitants. This also applies to a metropolis that should be divided into neighborhoods of this magnitude. Why? For a simple reason: if all the members of an "original" community have widening interrelationships (diaspora) it will be possible to connect indirectly or directly with the members of the various groups that participate in the same place. All individuals different from the original group but all "effective elements" of the same collectivity.

Thus expanding the branch of interest from close or distant kinship to sharing, similarity and coexistence in the same place. At this point the various entities (or groups of individuals) are equal to each other, intertwined in a context of relationships and form the basis of the ideal city. Perhaps the members of the city will belong to different classes but together with us they live in the city, with them we maintain numerous personal relationships as between members of an ideal tribe. This can be defined as society and the process described leads to strong correlation and socialization and enlivens the entire community. But it can be said that one hundred thousand inhabitants are a limit. Since this is the possible level of interrelation and the bioregional city - according to me - must include social subdivision criteria that respect these numerical terms.

I have nothing against human life in human agglomerations, but it is necessary to bring rebalancing elements to the set of vital elements, whether they are material or architectural.

The first step towards the re-harmonization of urban areas is the recognition that they are all located in bioregions, within which they can become protocols and eco-sustainable. The peculiarity of the soils, river basins, native plants and animals, climate, seasonal variation and other characteristics that are present in a bioregional place-life (ecosystem), constitute the basic context for the supply of resources such as: food, energy and materials various. For this to happen in a sustainable way, cities must identify and balance each other with natural systems.

Not only do they have to source resources locally to meet the needs of their inhabitants but they also have to adapt their needs to local conditions. This means keeping the natural characteristics that still remain intact and / or restoring as many of them as possible. For example, by rehabilitating polluted bays, lakes and rivers so that they can once again become healthy habitats for aquatic life, thus contributing to the self-sufficiency of urban areas. The conditions that distinguish geographical areas depend on their particular natural characteristics: one more reason to adopt the basic principles of bioregionalism, appropriate and specific for each place and - above all - usable to better orient municipal policies.

The guidelines for this change can be taken from some basic principles that govern ecosystems:

1) Interdependence. Raise awareness of the interchange between production and consumption, so that procurement, reuse, recycling and restoration can become integrated.

2) Diversity. Support diversity of opinion so as to satisfy vital needs as well as a multiplicity of cultural, social and political expressions. Resisting solutions that favor individual interests and monoculture.

3) Self-regulation. Encourage decentralized activities promoted by neighborhood-district groups. Replacing the top-down bureaucracy with local group assemblies.

4) Economic sustainability. The aim of the policy is to operate with far-sighted interests, minimizing fictitious remedies and encouraging a long-term ecological conversion process.

It seems to me that the material dealt with for the moment may suffice for a reflection on the subject.

Testo Italiano:
