Spiritual practice is not a "job" but a loving care for life - La pratica spirituale non è un “lavoro” ma una amorevole cura per la vita

Some believe that spiritual practice is a sort of "occupation" like that of a student or worker who must perform specific tasks to "obtain" enlightenment or at least awakening. This "voluntaristic" attitude often creates expectations and from the spiritual point of view even distances oneself from true knowledge, since one fixes oneself on the medium without looking at the subject who wants to reach knowledge.

The subject in truth is our own Self but we ignore it and make it an "object" to be pursued. And that "object" is our ego - as Ramana Maharshi said - which disguises itself as a policeman to look for the thief that he himself is.

About this "game" I remember the sentence pronounced by King Janaka who, after listening to and understanding the nondualistic teaching given to him by his guru Vasishta, exclaimed: "Now I understand who the thief is and I will fix him immediately" (referring to the tendency identifier with the body-mind that believes it is performing the action).

In short, the enthusiasm in carrying out the so-called religious "duty" and the compulsion to practice in order to obtain results through will and penance, can procure forms of dependence and "spiritual" illusion and is a deviation from sincere inner research.

This happens when one joins a sect, when one adheres to a religion and relies on the indications of a hypothetical "savior". It seems that some people need to feel "rooted" and framed in a compact group (often it happens with Christians and Mohammedans, and similar faiths), especially if they are experiencing moments of emotional or other emptiness (worldly concerns, sense of lack or inadequacy, etc.).

But openly opposing or denigrating the choices made by such people does not help them to understand the cause of their need to fill a hole, which lies in their inability to accept themselves for who they are without thinking that they want to forcibly change the state of things. or one's condition as a function of a hypothetical “other” achievement.

Accepting oneself alone can interrupt the mechanism of desire and fear, because by accepting one understands the situation experienced in its entirety and the appropriate action arises spontaneously. But acceptance is sometimes also painful. This concerns each of us who live in the world. But by living consciously in the world one can understand the nature of the world and of consciousness.

However, one cannot define or impart a universal "cure" for the various anomalies of interpretation of one's reality, saying "do this or do that". Sometimes we also need to get lost in order to find ourselves again. Everyone must be able to grow in his own way.

To develop inner clarity it takes discrimination and detachment. The self-investigation recommended by Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta Maharaj is the most direct way to identify the "thief" who robs us of Awareness (dragging us into the world of thought and speculation).

Even fixing the attention on a formula, such as the koans on the Zen path (in which the neophyte is asked to answer questions that cannot reasonably be answered) can definitely help, as can the careful repetition of a mantra. But the mantra should not be considered a way to develop the will or the ability to obtain mental powers or well-being, on the contrary it serves to dissolve any supposition of power and identification with mental states. The mantra to carry out its function must be alive, imparted by the one who has realized the nature of him, which is the Self. The repetition of the mantra is a personal matter and should be practiced during the day, mentally, to center on the Self (on Awareness). I myself use this simple method that requires no other help than remembrance and attention paid to the Self. in this abandonment and in this surrender to one's Self, love arises, and the understanding of what we really are, beyond form and thought.
