Bioregionalism, evolution and conservation of resources
Several years ago I helped my friend Peter Boom to make the reddition of "2020 - The new Messiah" in Italian, a book of fantasy-ecology in which he imagines the end of the world following a series of ecological catastrophes caused by man. At that time, in the early 90s of the last century, I was already part of the nascent bioregional strand and "deep ecology", and I found interesting the theses of Peter, who imagined an awkward attempt by the powerful to save themselves from planetary destruction by means of of "a new ark" (which welcomed themselves and their women) and ended miserably in a self-destructive atomic roar. In short, the question was and is whether humans will be able to inherit the earth.
The worlds of man are manifold but all in thought .. only one is real: this Earth. If we cannot honor our lives honorably on Earth, how can we hope for salvation by emigrating to other planets? How can we hope to be welcomed into the world of extraterrestrial universal life if we have not even been able to maintain life on our small planet? With this I believe that the experiment of our survival must be able to come true here where we are ... It is useless to hope for colonies on the Moon, on Mars or on Venus ... it is useless to look for water on those desolate worlds if here - where there is a lot - we are unable to keep it clean.
Yet already there were several enlightened scientists and spiritualists who since the dawn of the consumer society have warned man of the risk of stepping out of the rails of the science / life balance. Today the human train is derailing with the sparkle of crazy splinters: GMO, methodical chemical poisoning of the earth and water, dirty atomic energy, social and moral decay, wild urbanization, destruction of resources accumulated in millennia by nature, etc.
Throughout its short history, man has enormously transformed the face of the Earth, because he can deliberately modify almost everything that constitutes his natural environment and control what grows and lives in it.
However, the plot of life is so delicate and so linked are the climate, the soil, the plants and the animals, that if a component of this complex is violently modified, if some threads are suddenly cut, the whole complex undergoes a modification. This is the intrinsic meaning of Bioregionalism and Deep Ecology.
For hundreds of years - and especially in the last century - man has been the cause of disfigurements, exterminations and profound alterations ... and this despite his contemporary ability to create embellishment and harmony. The intellectual power that allows man to design and build is the same that allows him to destroy. With the immense increase in the human population, the ability to cause material damage as well as the refinement of thought and reflection have grown exponentially.
Unfortunately this Earth of ours is not a country of Bengodi or a horn of eternal abundance ... the resources of the planet, patiently accumulated and saved in its womb, are now in the process of being exhausted. Biodiversity and purity of the vital genome are increasingly at risk ... many animal species resist only in zoos or botanical gardens. Throughout the modern world, every new economic and scientific enterprise is followed by plague and disease, continuous development is equivalent to the accelerated consumption of goods, in the inability of environmental recovery and restoration by nature.
We must immediately and with the utmost seriousness and determination stop the fall, preserving the residual resources and what remains of wild life, not only for the maintenance of natural beauty but above all because the overall harmony, that is the real survival of the living community (and of man himself) depends on those components.
Indeed, the future of humanity does not remain in its colonization of other planets in the solar system but in its ability to conserve life on planet Earth.
For this reason biology, profound ecology, the spirituality of nature are essential aspects of the new consciousness paradigm. One of the greatest vital mysteries, which we have a duty to face and solve, is that relating to our true nature. But religions and science will never be able to give us an answer if we do not start looking for it directly in us and around us. Otherwise we will not be able to get out of the repetitive mechanism of wars, of insensitive exploitation, of racial and interspecist conflicts ....
Humanity is not only symbolized by these anthropomorphic bipeds and it is not only an organic agglomeration called "body", that lives and pulses energetically inside and outside of us.
Earth is our home, we inherited it from a slow and laborious global process of life, but are we sure we can leave it to future generations in the same integrity and opulence in which we received it? Human dignity is also played out in this .... we therefore accept the challenge posed to our intelligence. Evolution has a unique direction, the growth of Consciousness, let's stay in it!

Bioregionalismo, evoluzione e conservazione delle risorse.
Parecchi anni fa aiutai l'amico Peter Boom a rendere in italiano “2020 - Il nuovo Messia” un libricino di fanta-ecologia in cui si immagina la fine del mondo in seguito ad una serie di catastrofi ecologiche causate dall'uomo. A quel tempo, primi anni '90 del secolo scorso, già facevo parte del nascente filone bioregionale e della “deep ecology” (come allora si diceva), e trovai interessanti le tesi di Peter, che immaginava un goffo tentativo da parte dei potenti di salvarsi dalla distruzione planetaria per mezzo di “una nuova arca” (che accogliesse loro stessi e le loro donne) e finì miseramente in un boato atomico autodistruttivo. Insomma l'interrogativo era ed è se gli umani saranno in grado di ereditare la terra...
I mondi dell'uomo sono molteplici ma tutti nel pensiero.. uno solo è reale: questa Terra. Se non siamo in grado di conservare la nostra vita onorevolmente sulla Terra come potremo sperare la salvezza emigrando su altri pianeti? Come potremo sperare di essere accolti nel consesso della vita universale extraterrestre se non siamo stati in grado nemmeno di mantenere la vita sul nostro piccolo pianeta? Con ciò ritengo che l'esperimento della nostra sopravvivenza deve potersi avverare qui dove siamo... Inutile sperare in colonie sulla Luna, su Marte o su Venere.. inutile cercare l'acqua su quei mondi desolati se qui -dove ce ne è tanta- non siamo in grado di mantenerla pulita.
Eppure già ci furono diversi scienziati e spiritualisti illuminati che sin dagli albori della società dei consumi avvertivano l'uomo del rischio di uscir fuori dai binari dell'equilibrio scienza/vita. Oggi il treno umano sta deragliando con scintillio di schegge impazzite: OGM, avvelenamento chimico metodico della terra e dell'acqua, energia atomica sporca, deperimento sociale e morale, urbanizzazione selvaggia, distruzione delle risorse accumulate in millenni dalla natura, etc.
L'uomo nel corso della sua breve storia ha enormemente trasformato la faccia della Terra, perché egli può deliberatamente modificare quasi tutto quel che costituisce il suo ambiente naturale e controllare quel che cresce e vive in esso.
La trama della vita è però tanto delicata e tanto legati sono tra loro il clima, il terreno, le piante e gli animali, che se una componente di questo complesso viene violentemente modificato, se alcuni fili vengono tagliati all'improvviso, l'intero complesso subisce una modificazione. Questo è il significato intrinseco del Bioregionalismo e dell'Ecologia Profonda.
Per centinaia di anni -e soprattutto nell'ultimo secolo- l'uomo è stato la causa di deturpazioni, stermini ed alterazioni profonde... e questo malgrado la sua contemporanea capacità di creare abbellimento ed armonia. Il potere intellettivo che consente all'uomo di progettare e costruire è lo stesso che gli consente di distruggere. Con l'aumento smisurato della popolazione umana la capacità di procurare danni materiali come pure l'affinamento del pensiero e della riflessione sono cresciuti esponenzialmente.
Purtroppo questa nostra Terra non è un Paese di Bengodi od un corno dell'eterna abbondanza... le risorse del pianeta, pazientemente accumulate e risparmiate nel suo ventre, sono ora in fase di esaurimento. La biodiversità e la purezza del genoma vitale sono sempre più a rischio... molte specie animali resistono solo negli zoo o nei giardini botanici. In tutto il mondo moderno ogni nuova impresa economica e scientifica viene seguita da peste e malanni, lo sviluppo continuo equivale al consumo accelerato dei beni, nella incapacità di recupero ambientale e ripristino da parte della natura.
Occorre da subito e con la massima serietà e determinazione fermare la caduta, preservando le risorse residue e quel che rimane della vita selvatica, non solo per il mantenimento della bellezza naturalistica ma soprattutto perché l'armonia complessiva, cioè la reale sopravvivenza della comunità dei viventi (e dell'uomo stesso) dipende da quelle componenti.
Il futuro dell'umanità, infatti, non resta nella sua colonizzazioni di altri pianeti del sistema solare bensì nella sua abilità di conservare la vita sul pianeta Terra.
Per questa ragione la biologia, l'ecologia profonda, la spiritualità della natura sono aspetti essenziali del nuovo paradigma coscienziale. Uno dei più grandi misteri vitali, che abbiamo il dovere di affrontare e risolvere, è quello relativo alla nostra vera natura. Ma le religioni e la scienza non saranno mai in grado di darci una risposta se non cominciamo a cercarla direttamente in noi ed attorno a noi. Altrimenti non saremo in grado di uscire dal meccanismo ripetitivo delle guerre, dello sfruttamento insensibile, dei conflitti razziali e interspecisti....
Umanità non è solo simbolizzata da questi bipedi antropomorfi e non è solo un agglomerato organico definito “corpo”. Possiamo dire che Umanità è la capacità di riconoscersi con tutto ciò che vive e pulsa energeticamente dentro e fuori di noi.
La Terra è la nostra casa, l'abbiamo avuta in eredità da un lento e laborioso processo globale della vita, ma siamo sicuri di poterla lasciare a nostra volta alle generazioni future nella stessa integrità e opulenza nella quale noi l'abbiamo ricevuta? La dignità umana si gioca anche in questo.... accettiamo dunque la sfida posta alla nostra intelligenza. L'evoluzione ha una direzione univoca, la crescita della Coscienza, restiamo in essa!
