Have you ever wondered what anti-Semitism is?

I know... It might seem like a trivial question, even stupid for many; yet today, many people ask it, Jews included. Some examples?

Norman G. Finkelstein, son of Jewish survivors, university professor, and author of several books, including "Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History." In this book, Finkelstein denounces accusations of anti-Semitism leveled by some Jewish organizations against opponents of the State of Israel's policies.

Shea Hecht, a rabbi and Jewish community leader, has argued that the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) creates cases of anti-Semitism where none exist, in order to justify the league's existence.

Yoav Shamir, an Israeli filmmaker, following accusations of anti-Semitism leveled at his first film, decided to address the sensitive topic in his second documentary, "Defamation." Below are excerpts from the film's review: "Shamir interviews various figures from the Israeli world, from his own grandmother to prominent rabbis, from the Anti-Defamation League, to actual academics considered mavericks (intellectually speaking), excluded from the Israeli intelligentsia, and even accused of Holocaust denial. Shamir travels from Jerusalem to New York, from Rome to Moscow, from Kiev to Auschwitz, and also casts a glance at the education received by the new generations, instilled with an exasperated sense of persecution and terror that at times borders on the ridiculous.

Content-wise, he is courageous in exploring from within the sense of persecution of some Jews, in highlighting the contradictions of intersecting racism across minorities (such as African-Americans and Jews) and within the Israeli state itself, and in questioning the true meaning of anti-Semitism today, asking whether the Holocaust is not At times, it has been used as a convenient tool to distort perspectives in clashes with Muslims, for example, and to mask other international political and economic interests tied to the state of Israel—as some claim.

Vi siete mai chiesti cosa sia l'antisemitismo?

Lo so... Sembrerebbe una domanda banale, per molti addirittura stupida; eppure oggigiorno sono in tanti a chiederselo, ebrei compresi. Qualche esempio?

Norman G. Finkelstein, figlio di sopravvissuti ebrei, professore universitario ed autore di diversi libri tra cui «Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History». In questo libro Finkelstein denuncia le accuse di antisemitismo proferite da alcune organizzazioni ebraiche nei confronti degli oppositori alla politica dello Stato d'Israele.

Shea Hecht, rabbino e leader della comunità ebraica, ha affermato che l'ADL (Lega Anti-diffamazione) crea casi di antisemitismo laddove non ci sono, al fine di giustificare l'esistenza della lega stessa.

Yoav Shamir, regista Israeliano, in seguito ad accuse di antisemitismo rivolte al suo primo film, ha deciso di affrontare il tema delicato nel suo secondo documentario "Defamation". Qui di seguito vi riporto alcune parti della recensione del film: "Shamir intervista diversi esponenti del mondo israeliano, a partire dalla propria nonna fino a eminenti rabbini, dalla lega anti-diffamazione, a veri e propri accademici considerati cani sciolti (intellettualmente parlando), esclusi dall'intellighenzia israelita, e accusati perfino di negare l'olocausto. Shamir viaggia da Gerusalemme a New York, da Roma a Mosca, da Kiev ad Auschwitz e getta anche uno sguardo sull'educazione ricevuta dalle nuove generazioni, a cui viene inculcato un esasperato sentimento di persecuzione e terrore che a volte sconfina quasi nel ridicolo.

Da un punto di vista dei contenuti, è coraggioso nell'indagare dall'interno il senso di persecuzione di alcuni ebrei, nel sottolineare le contraddizioni di un razzismo incrociato attraverso le minoranze (come afro-americani ed ebrei) e dentro lo stesso stato israeliano, e nel mettere in discussione il vero significato dell'antisemitismo oggi, chiedendosi se l'olocausto non venga adoperato, a volte, come uno strumento di comodo per distorcere le prospettive negli scontri con i musulmani, ad esempio, e per mascherare altri interessi politici ed economici internazionali legati allo stato di Israele - come alcuni sostengono.
